Centrifugal Pump Liner Material Change

Chronic liner wear and supply challenges were putting pump reliability at risk, so alternative materials were trialed, analyzed, and backed by modelling. The result: a 3.5× jump in impeller life, ~$70K in annual savings, and a major reduction in downtime risk.

LIFE EXTENSION
3.5x
Impeller life increased from 1.75 to 6.2 months.
SAVINGS
70K$/year
Reduction in labor and material cost per year.

Challenges

The OEM liners used across four centrifugal pumps had historically high wear rates. With the supply chain challenges during COVID, the site was having a difficult time stocking enough parts to keep the operation running.

Process

2 trial liners were installed and monitored throughout their complete life cycle to determine actual wear performance. Statistical analysis compared old vs. new liner performance, with a 10-year cost simulation to validate the business case.

Actions

  • 10-year cost simulation completed to review financial impact.
  • Updated work instructions to reflect material changes.
  • Communication with relevant stakeholders on findings and updates.
  • Updated CMMS to reflect spare part stock requirements.
  • Expanded material changes to other pump applications.
